మానువుడు కూడా ఒక జంతువు అనే విషయం మనకు తెలిసిందే. కొన్ని జీవులు తమ భావాలను సైగలు, అరుపులు, ప్రవర్తనల ద్వారా తెలియజేస్తే మానవులు మాత్రమే మాటల రూపంలో భావాలు పంచుకుంటారు. ఈ భూమిపై నివసిస్తున్న జంతుజాతుల్లో మానవుడు మాత్రమే మాట్లాడగలడు. అయితే మిగతా జంతువులు ఎందుకు మాట్లాడడం లేదు అనే సందేహం మీకు వచ్చే ఉంటుంది. అవి ఎందుకు మాట్లాడలేకపోతున్నాయనే విషయాన్ని ఓ అధ్యయనం వెల్లడించింది. ఇందులో ఆసక్తికర విషయాలు ఉన్నాయి. మనుషులు మాట్లాడేందుకు స్వర పేటిక ఎంతో సహాయపడుతుంది. ఈ స్వరపేటికలో కాలక్రమంలో చాలా మార్పులు జరిగాయి. 43 రకాల జాతి కోతుల స్వరపేటికలను పరీక్షించి కీలక విషయాలు వెల్లడించారు. స్వర త్వచం అనేది మనుషుల్లో మాత్రమే ఉందని, వేరే జంతువుల్లో అది లేవని గుర్తించారు. స్వర తంతువులకు అంటి ఉండే చిన్న రిబ్బన్‌ వంటి నిర్మాణమే స్వర త్వచం. అంతే కాకుండా వాయు కోశాలు లేకపోవడం వల్ల మానవుడు మాట్లాడే శక్తిని పెంచుకున్నాడని నిర్ధరించారు.

అయితే ఇతర జంతువుల గొంతు నిర్మాణాలు చాలా గందరగోళంగా ఉంటాయి. ఈ కారణంగానే అవి కాలానుగుణంగా పరిణామం చెందలేక, మాట్లాడే శక్తిని పెంచుకోలేకపోతున్నాయి. ఈ మేరకు జపాన్‌లోని క్యోటో యూనివర్సిటీలో సెంటర్‌ ఫర్‌ ఎవల్యూషనరీ ఆరిజిన్స్‌ ఆఫ్‌ హ్యూమన్‌ బిహేవియర్‌ శాస్త్రవేత్తలు వెల్లడించారు. ఈ అధ్యయనం వివరాలను 'సైన్స్‌' జర్నల్‌లో ప్రచురించారు. చింపాంజీలు, గొరిల్లాలు, ఒరంగుటాన్స్‌, గిబ్బన్‌ తదితర కోతి జాతులపై పరిశోధనలు జరిపి ఈ విషయాలు తెలుసుకున్నారు.

1 THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE

కుందేలు మరియు తాబేలు కథ

A tortoise one day met a hare who made fun of her.

ఒక రోజు ఒక తాబేలు కుందేలును కలుసుకుంది

"My, my, you move so slowly, you will never get far!"

నువు నా కంటే వేగంగా కదలలేవు అంది కుందేలు

The tortoises, upset by the hare's manner, said,

కుందేలు మాటలకు తాబేలు నిరుత్సాహ పడింది

"Let's have a race and see who is faster."

మనం పందెం వేసుకుందాం

ఎవరు వేగంగా పరుగెడతారో

The hare laughed and said, "You must be joking! But all right, we'll see who reaches the other side of the hill first." Off he ran, leaving the tortoise far behind.

తాబేలు మాటలకు కుందేలు నవ్వి సరే  అయితే కనబడే కొండను ఎవరు ముందు చేరతారో వారే గెలిచినట్లని పరిగెత్తుతూ పోయింది

After a while, the hare stopped to wait for the tortoise to come long. He waited and waited till he felt sleepy. 

కొంత సేపటి తరువాత కుందేలు  తాబేలు కోసం ఎదురుచూస్తూ ఎదురుచూస్తూ   ఇంకా రాదోమో అనుకుంటూ నిద్రలోకి జారుకుంది

"I might as well take a nap,' he thought. "Even if she catches up with me, I can easily win the race." So he lay down under a shady tree and closed his eyes.

తాబేలు వచ్చి నన్ను కలుసుకున్న నిద్రలేచి వెంటనే పరిగెత్తి పందెం గెలిచెస్తాను 

అందుకు ఇప్పుడేం కంగారు లేదని దారి ప్రక్కన చెట్టు నీడలో నిద్రపోయింది కుందేలు

When the tortoise passed the sleeping hare, 

తాబేలు మెల్లగా సడుచుకుంటూ కుందేలును దాటి వెళ్ళిపోయింది

she walked on slowly but steadily. 

నెమ్మదిగా నడిచినా తాబేలు

గెలవాలని పట్టుదలగా నడిచింది

By the time the hare woke up, 

కొంత సేపటికి కుందేలుకు మెలకువ వచ్చింది

the tortoise was near the finishing line.

తాబేలు పందె గెలిచే చోటుకు చేరుకొవడం చూసింది కుందేలు

 He ran as fast as he could, 

గబ గబా పరిగెత్తింది కుందేలు

but he could not catch up with the tortoise.

కాని తాబేలును అందుకోలేకపోయి  పందెం ఓడిపోయింది కుందేలు

Slow and steady can win the race.

మెల్లగా నైనా పట్టుదలుంటే విజయం సాధించవచ్చు

2 *THE ANT AND THE DOVE*

*చీమ — పావురం*

One hot day, an ant was searching for some water. 

ఒక వేసవికాలం రోజు చీమ దాహంతో నీళ్ళ కొరకు వెతుకుతుంది

After walking around for some time, she came to a spring.

( spring అంటే ఆహారం చీమకు కావలసిన ఆహారం నీళ్ళు )

కొంతసేపు చుట్టూ నడిస్తూ వెతికే సరికి ఒక పారే కాలువ కనిపించింది.

Co reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass.

నీళ్ళను చేరుకోవడానికి గడ్డిదుబ్బు ఎక్కవలసి వచ్చింది

 While making her way up, she slipped and fell into the water.

ఆలా ఎక్కుతుండగా కాలుజారి కాలువలో పడిపోయింది

She could have drowned if a dove up a nearby tree had not een her.

సమీపంలోని చెట్టుపై ఉన్న పావురం చూడకపోతే నీటిలో మునిగిపోయేది.

 Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the dove quickly lucked off a leaf and dropped it into the water near the truggling ant. 

నీటిలో నుండి బయటకు రావడానికి కష్టాలు పడుతున్న చీమను పావురం చూసి, వెంటనే  చెట్టు ఆకును తెంచి నీటిలో వేసింది.

The ant moved towards the leaf and limbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry ground.

చీమ ఆకును పట్టుకుని కాలువ ఒడ్డుకు క్షేమంగా చేరింది.

just at that time, a hunter near by was throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it.

అదే సమయంలో బోయవాడు పావురం వేటకు వచ్చి పావురం కోసం వల పన్నాడు.

Guessing what he was about to do, the ant quickly bit him on he heel.

అది గమనించి చీమ బోయవాడి పాదాన్ని గట్టిగా కొరికింది

 Feeling the pain, the hunter dropped his net. 

బాదతో బోయవాడు వలను వదిలివేసాడు.

The love was quick to fly away to safety.

బోయవానిని గమనించిన పావురం అక్కడ నుండి ఎగిరిపోయింది

*One good turn deserves another.*

*THE THIRSTY CROW*

*కాకి— దాహం కథ*

One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water. 

ఒక ఎండాకాలం రోజున దాహం తీర్చుకోవడానికి నీటి కోసం  ఎగురుతూ వెతకసాగింది.

For a long time, she could not find any.

ఎంతసేపటికీ నీటి జాడ దొరకలేదు.

 She felt very weak, almost giving up hope.

బాగా నీరసించి పోయిన కాకి దాదాపు ఆశను వదులు కుంది.

Suddenly, she saw a water jug below her. 

హఠాత్తుగా కాకి ఓ నీటి కూజా చూసింది.

She flew straight down to see if there was any water inside. 

ఎగురుతూ కూజా పైన వాలి నీటి కోసం తొంగి చూసింది.

Yes, she could see some water inside the jug!

కూజాలో బాగా అడుగున కొంత నీరు కనబడింది.

The crow tried to push her head into the jug. 

నీరు అందుతుందేమో అని ప్రయత్నించింది.

Sadly, she found that the neck of the jug was too narrow. 

కూజా మూతి ఇరుకుగా ఉండటంతో నీరు

అందలేదు.

 Then she tried to push the jug down for the water to flow out. 

నీరు వస్తుందేమో అని ప్రయత్నించింది

She found that the jug was too heavy.

కూజా బరువుగా ఉందని తెలుసుకుంది.

The crow thought hard for a while.

కాకి బాగా తీవ్రంగా ఆలోచించ సాగింది.

 Then looking around her, she saw some pebbles

 పరిసరాలలో కొన్ని గులకరాళ్ళను  చూసింది.

 She suddenly had a good idea. 

మంచి ఆలోచన తట్టింది కాకికి.

She started picking up the pebbles one by one, dropping each into the jug. 

కాకి గులకరాళ్ళను ఒకటి ఒకటి తీసుకుని

కూజాలో వేయసాగింది.

As more and more pebbles filled the jug, the water level kept rising.

కూజాలోనికి గులకరాళ్ళు వేయగా వేయగా

నీరు పైకి రాసాగింది.

 Soon it was high enough for the crow to drink. 

పైకి వచ్చిన నీటిని కాకి తృప్తిగా తాగింది.

Her plan had worked!

కాకి ఆలోచన ఫలించింది.

3*ANTS and GRASS HOPPER*

*చీమలు  — మిడత*

One bright autumn day, a family of ants was busy working in the warm sunshine.

అవిఎండాకాలం చివరి దినాలు.ఓ  చీమల కుటుంబం  అంతా  మంచి ఎండలో తీరిక లేకుండా కష్టపడి పని చేస్తూ ఉన్నాయి.

 They were drying out the grain they had stored up during the summer when a starving grasshopper came up. 

సంపాదించిన దాన్యపు గింజలను ఎండబెట్టుకుంటుంటే మిడత వచ్చింది చీమల దగ్గరకు.

With his fiddle under his arm, the grasshopper humbly begged for a bite to eat.

మిడత తినడానికి కొన్ని గింజలు ఇమ్మని దీనంగా అడిగింది చీమలను.

“What!” cried the ants,

ఏమిటి ? అంటూ అరిచాయి చీమలు

 “Haven’t you stored any food away for the winter? 

శీతాకాలం కోసం గింజలు  ఏవీ నిల్వ చేసుకోలేదా ? 

What in the world were you doing all summer?”

వేసవి కాలం అంతా ఏమి చేస్తున్నావ్ 

“I didn’t have time to store any food before winter,” the grasshopper whined.

నాకు సమయంలేక తిండి గింజలు ఏవీ నిల్వ చేసుకోలేదు అంది మిడత

 “I was too busy making music that the summer flew by.”

నేను  పాడుతూ తీరికలేకుండా ఎగురుతూ గడిపాను అంది మిడత

The ant laughed I unkindly. "In that case you can sing all winter as far as I am concerned," he said. And without another word he turned back to his work.

అయితే ఏమంటావ్ శీతాకాలం కూడా పాడుతూనే గడుపు అంటూ చీమలు వెళ్ళిపోయాయి

 grasshopper and returned to work.

మిడత ఆహారంకోసం కష్టపడటం మొదలెట్టింది.

4*TWO FRIENDS*

*ఇద్దరు మిత్రులు*

One day, two friends were walking through the forest. 

ఒకరోజు ఇద్దరు స్నేహితులు అడవి మార్గాన నడిచి వెళుతున్నారు

They knew the forest was a dangerous place and that anything could happen. 

ఆ అడవి మార్గం చాలా ప్రమాదకరమైనదని 

వారిద్దరికీ తెలుసు

So, they promised to remain close to each other in case of any danger.

ప్రమాదం సంభవిస్తే ఒకరికి ఒకరు సహాయం చేసుకోవాలని ప్రమాణం చేసుకున్నారు

All of a sudden, a big bear was approaching them.

ఉన్నపళంగా ఓ పెద్ద ఎలుగుబంటి ఎదురుపడింది.

 One of the friends quickly climbed a nearby tree, leaving the other friend behind.

ఇద్దరులో ఒక స్నేహితుడు గబ గబా ప్రక్కనే ఉన్న చెట్టు ఎక్కాసాడు తోటి మిత్రుడిని వదిలి

The other friend did not know how to climb, and instead, followed common sense.

రెండవ మిత్రుడికి చెట్టు ఎక్కడం రాదు, వెంటనే తను లోకఙ్ఞానాన్ని ఉపయోగించాడు

 He laid down on the ground and remained there, breathless, pretending to be dead.

అతను చచ్చిన వానివలె ఊపిరి బిగబట్టి నేలపై పడుకున్నాడు

The bear approached the friend lying on the ground.

ఎలుగుబంటి చచ్చినవానివలె పడుకున్న వాని వద్దకు వచ్చింది.

 The animal started to smell his ear before slowly wandering off again because bears never touch those who are dead.

ఎలుగు వాసన చూసి ఊపిరి రావటంలేదని గమనించిందింది వెళ్ళిపోయింది. ఎందుకంటే ఎలుగుబంటి చచ్చిన జంతులను ముట్టుకొనదు.

Soon, the friend who hid in the tree came down. 

చెట్టుమీద ఉన్న మిత్రుడు మెల్లగా దిగాడు.

He asked his friend, “My dear friend, what secret did the bear whisper to you?” 

క్రిందనున్న మిత్రుడు దగ్గరకు వచ్చి ఎలుగు బంటి నీ చెవిలొ ఏదో రహస్యం చెప్పింది ఎమిటది ? అని అడిగాడు.

The friend replied, “The bear simply advised me never to believe a false friend.”

స్నేహితుడు బదులిస్తూ నీ లాంటి మాట తప్పే మిత్రులను ఎప్పటికీ నమ్మవద్దని సలహా ఇచ్చింది అని అన్నాడు.

*5  . A WOLF AND SHEEP*

*తోడేలు —  గొర్రె*

A wolf had gotten seriously hurt during a fight with a bear. 

ఎలుగుబంటితో జరిగిన గొడవలో తోడేలు తీవ్రంగా గాయపడింది.

He wasn’t able to move, and so, could not satisfy his thirst or hunger.

తోడేలు కదలలేకపోయింది , మరియు దానికి బాగా దాహం , ఆకలిని వేయసాగింది.

at the time, a sheep passed by his hiding place, and so the wolf decided to call out to him. “Please fetch me some water,” said the wolf. “That might give me some strength to get some solid food.”

ఆదే సమయంలో అటుగా ఒక గొర్రె వెళ్ళడంచూసి దానితో  నాకు కొంచె నీరు ఇవ్వగలవా నేను వేటాడి ఆహారం సంపాదించుకుంటాను అంది తోడేలు

“Solid food!” the sheep said. “I suppose that means me. If I brought you something to drink, it would merely be to wash me down. Don’t speak to me about fetching a drink.”

ఆహారం సంపాదించుకుంటావా . నీకు నీరు అందిస్తే ఓపిక తెచ్చుకుని  ఆహారంగా నన్నే తినేస్తావు. నీరు తెమ్మని నన్ను అడగకు అంటూ వెళ్ళిపోయింది గొర్రె .
